19. Greece: Lesvos - Molyvos

Our second destination in Lesvos was Molyvos in the north west of the island.

We stayed very near the port where most of the restaurants are.

Our apartment was newly built in 2006 in the old stone tradition, in what was the garden of an old mansion. A lovely setting with views of the port and some shade for the car.

We were on the first level with lots of balcony.

Molyvos has a small stone beach serviced by a hotel located in what was originally the olive oil factory.

It also has a 14th century Byzantine castle, the walls of which have been stabilised for safety but it is difficult to get much of a sense of what you're looking at because the translations to English (where they exist) are confusing and general signage is almost non-existent.

However, the castle did have an impressive entrance ...

... and some wonderful views.  The weather was extremely hot - mid 30's - and there was always a heat haze which masks the real blue of the Aegean.

Talking of signs - this one was at a shower on an almost deserted beach.

The old medieval streets that climb the hill towards the castle are almost entirely covered by wisteria.

We filled one day with a drive north up the coast to Skala Sykamineas, a village used for multiple Greek postcard images.  It has a white church on a rock overlooking a tiny harbour village.

Looking down from the church on its rock.

Not a bad spot to while away a few hours.

After a week in Molyvos we were more than ready to move on - next Chios.
